Redundant power supplies, components designed for better reliability (maybe not a longer life span, but fewer hiccups along the way) and a machine designed to actually operate in the intended role. I just need professional advice on my original question, and how I can justify the cost of a OEM server to my business.īuy, and buy a server, not a beefy desktop. I already know the pros and cons of virtual servers and standalone, so please no explanation needed there. I wanted VMs because they would be easier to backup, restore, and could be moved to another machine more easily. I could also vurtualize any other server functionality needed. I would then create 2 separate virtual servers one serving as a file server, the other serving as a database server. I wanted to build or buy a machine and install VMware. So basically warranty repairs and services are a plus for OEM.

If I buy an OEM, then I can get onsite repair services in case I am not available. I know that one problem with a custom machine would be that I would personally have to go onsite to fix it. Why would I want to buy a "Server" that cost $1500-2000? When I can build an equal or better machine for less? Or I could build 2 machines, one main server and a redundancy server as a backup? I am still green when it comes to servers and what to get, so I have been looking at building one, buying one, or getting a desktop unit to serve as one. I work for a radio station, and they want a file server, as well as a low level database server.
